Changing your passport: do you need a new UK ETA?

An ETA is linked to a specific passport. Renewing or replacing that document can mean a new authorisation is required.

Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.

Your ETA is linked to the passport used to apply

An ETA is valid for up to two years or until the linked passport expires, if earlier. To use it, you must travel with the passport named in the application.

The authorisation is checked against your travel document: keeping an old ETA reference is not enough after changing passports.

Renewed or replaced passport

The UK service says you need a new ETA if your passport has expired or changed and you are subject to the requirement.

This can follow a routine renewal, loss, theft, damage or another change requiring a new document.

What should you check before departure?

Make sure the passport you will board with is the one linked to your valid ETA. The UK also offers an online service to check an ETA’s existence and expiry date.

If you have just renewed your passport, check early enough to apply again if necessary.

Key points

A new passport requires a new ETA when an ETA is needed for your journey.
