UK ETA or visa: how do they differ?
An ETA is not a visa. What you need depends mainly on nationality, purpose of travel and intended duration.
Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.
What is an ETA for?
An ETA is an electronic travel authorisation for certain nationalities eligible to visit the UK without a visa. It can cover tourism, family visits, certain business trips and short courses, generally for visits of up to six months.
When might a visa be needed?
You may need a visa if your nationality is not ETA-eligible or your visit falls outside what an ETA permits, such as certain work activities, longer studies or settling in the UK.
Rules vary considerably with your plans. The official UK service helps you check which authorisation fits your circumstances.
Does an ETA guarantee entry?
No. An ETA gives permission to travel to the UK, but does not guarantee admission at the border. You must still meet the entry conditions for your stay.
Do not choose an ETA simply because the process seems easier: the authorisation must fit your actual circumstances.
