UK ETA processing time: when should you apply?

An ETA decision can arrive quickly, but it is best not to wait until the last moment before travelling.

Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.

What timeframe does the UK government announce?

The UK government says decisions usually arrive by email within a day, but may take up to three working days. Some applications need further checks.

Family or group members may receive decisions at different times, even if applications were made together.

When should you apply?

Apply sufficiently before departure to allow time for extra checks, photo issues or information that needs correcting.

Wait for the email confirming approval of your ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom.

What if the decision is delayed?

If no decision arrives after three working days, first check the spam folder of the email address used to apply. UKVI then provides a contact channel for applications awaiting a decision.

Key points

An intermediary cannot speed up the UK authorities’ decision.
