UK ETA for French citizens: what you need to know
French citizens are among the nationalities eligible to apply for an ETA to visit the United Kingdom. Here are the essential points to know before preparing your trip.
Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.
Do French citizens need an ETA?
For a short, visa-free visit to the UK, a French citizen generally needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), depending on their circumstances and purpose of travel. It covers tourism, visits to relatives, certain business trips and short courses.
Some people do not need an ETA, including British or Irish citizens, holders of a valid UK visa and people already permitted to live, work or study in the UK.
An ETA for every traveller
The authorisation is individual. Every family member needs their own ETA, including babies and children. An adult may apply on behalf of someone else.
The ETA is electronically linked to the passport used to apply. You must therefore travel with that same passport.
How long can you stay?
An ETA may allow visits of up to six months for permitted purposes. It does not allow you to settle in the UK or, except where UK rules provide exceptions, work for a UK company.
Rules depend on nationality, purpose of travel and personal circumstances. Always check your situation before departure.
