UK ETA for transit: check your connection
A connection through the UK does not automatically require an ETA. Whether you pass through UK border control is a key point to check.
Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.
Landside transit: an ETA may be required
If your connection requires you to pass UK border control before continuing, this is landside transit. Travellers covered by the ETA scheme then need an ETA.
This can happen if you must collect and recheck luggage, change airports or if the connection arrangements require crossing the border.
Airside transit: check your itinerary
Different rules apply if you stay in the international transit area without passing border control. Arrangements depend on the airport, terminal, flights and sometimes the airline.
If you are unsure whether your connection involves border control, check directly with your airline before departure.
Check before travelling
Do not rely only on layover length. A short connection can still require border control, while another can remain entirely in transit.
Whether you need an ETA also depends on nationality and immigration status.
For transit, check both your nationality and whether the itinerary passes through UK border control.
