How long is a UK ETA valid?

An ETA is a digital authorisation linked to a passport. Its validity period must not be confused with the maximum length of a visit.

Information checked against official GOV.UK resources.

Validity of up to two years

An approved ETA is valid for two years or until the linked passport expires, if earlier. It can be used for multiple trips during that period as long as the applicable conditions remain met.

ETA validity and length of stay

Two years of validity does not mean you can stay in the UK for two years. Permitted visits can generally last up to six months.

An ETA permits travel to the UK but does not guarantee entry: admission is decided at border control.

What happens if your passport changes?

The authorisation is digitally linked to the passport used to apply. If it expires or is replaced, you must apply for a new ETA with the new passport when an ETA is required.

Key points

Before another trip, check both your passport and ETA validity.
